Martha was born in 1775 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire and her baptism took place on January 15th, 1775 in Saint Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Stafford.1 2   Martha's father was Joseph Turvey and her mother was Sarah Francis. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Solomon, William, John, Joseph, Silvanus, Sarah, Milly, Maria and Nancy.  She was the third youngest of the eleven children.
