Joseph was born in 1770 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire and his baptism took place on May 20th, 1770 in Saint Bartholomew, Wednesbury, Stafford.1 2   Joseph's father was Joseph Turvey and his mother was Sarah Francis. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, Solomon, William, John, Silvanus, Sarah, Milly, Maria, Martha and Nancy.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
