William was born in 1784 in Whitehaven, Cumberland and his christening took place on August 8th, 1784 in St Nicholas, Whitehaven, Cumberland.1 2   William's father was Edward Quirk and his mother was Isabella.  His paternal grandparents were James Quirk and ?Margaret. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Edward, James, Thomas, Catherine and Jane.  Catherine and William were twins.
