James was born in 1780 in Whitehaven, Cumberland and his christening took place on October 15th, 1780 in St Nicholas, Whitehaven, Cumberland.1 2   James' father was Edward Quirk and his mother was Isabella.  His paternal grandparents were James Quirk and ?Margaret. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Edward, William, Thomas, Catherine and Jane.
