John was born in 1797 in Whitehaven, Cumberland and his christening took place on February 12th, 1797 in St Nicholas, Whitehaven, Cumberland.1 2   John's father was Edward Quirk and his mother was Ann Allan.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Quirk and Isabella. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Edward, William, Edward, James, Thomas, Ann, Isabella, Martha and Elizabeth.  John and Ann were twins.
