James was born in 1815 in Whitehaven, Cumberland.1   James' father was Edward Quirk and his mother was Ann Allan.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Quirk and Isabella. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Edward, John, William, Edward, Thomas, Ann, Isabella, Martha and Elizabeth.  He died at the age of 43 in December 1858 in Cockermouth, Cumberland.2
