Emily was born in December 1842 in Poplar, Middlesex.1  Emily's father was William Philpot and her mother was Margaret Norman.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Norman and Mary Hogg. She had a brother and four sisters, named Charles, Cecilia, Angelina, Elizabeth and Jessie.  She was the third youngest of the six children.  She died at the age of 57 in June 1900 in West Ham, Essex.2
