Thomas was born on December 5th, 1798 in South Shields, Durham and his christening took place there on March 11th, 1799.1   Thomas' father was Thomas Norman and his mother was Mary Hogg.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Hogg and Ursula Potts. He had a brother and two sisters, named Robert, Margaret and Cecilia.  He was the oldest of the four children.
