Robert was born on July 1st, 1810 in South Shields, Durham and his christening took place there on December 31st, 1812.1   Robert's father was Thomas Norman and his mother was Mary Hogg.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Hogg and Ursula Potts. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Margaret and Cecilia.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
