Mary was born in December 1846 in Plymouth, Devon.1   Mary's father was Alexander Gendall Newton and her mother was Marian Ponisi.  Her paternal grandparents were Isaac Newton and Elizabeth Gendall; her maternal grandparents were James Ponisi and Mary Newton. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Isaac, James, Robert, Rosina, Julia, Julia, Clara, Clara and Julia.  She was the oldest of the ten children.  She died at the age of 47 in March 1894 in Holborn, Middlesex.2
