John was born in 1788 in Penzance, Cornwall.1   John's father was William Newton and his mother was Frances Drew.  His paternal grandparents were William Newton and Isabella Cornish. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Isaac, Mary, Mary, Frances, Anne, Eleanor, Grace and Johanna.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
