Eleanor was born in 1799 in Penzance, Cornwall.1   Eleanor's father was William Newton and her mother was Frances Drew.  Her paternal grandparents were William Newton and Isabella Cornish. She had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Isaac, Mary, Mary, Frances, Anne, Grace and Johanna.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.
