Johanna was born in 1805 in Penzance, Cornwall.1   Johanna's father was William Newton and her mother was Frances Drew.  Her paternal grandparents were William Newton and Isabella Cornish. She had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Isaac, Mary, Mary, Frances, Anne, Eleanor and Grace.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
