Joseph was born in 1812 in Sherbourne Saint John, Hampshire and his christening took place there on July 5th, 1812.1 2   Joseph's father was Joseph Matthews and his mother was Ann Dicker. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Charles, George, William, David, Harriett and Olive.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
