George was born in 1805 in Sherbourne Saint John, Hampshire and his christening took place there on April 14th, 1805.1 2   George's father was Joseph Matthews and his mother was Ann Dicker. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Charles, William, Joseph, David, Harriett and Olive.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
