Charles was born in 1803 in Sherbourne Saint John, Hampshire and his christening took place there on April 24th, 1803.1 2   Charles' father was Joseph Matthews and his mother was Ann Dicker. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, William, Joseph, David, Harriett and Olive.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
