Thomas was born on May 10th, 1825 in Felstead, Essex and his christening took place there on June 19th, 1825.1   Thomas' father was John Kemp and his mother was Elizabeth Bentall. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, William, George, Joseph, Edward, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
