John was born on June 26th, 1812 in Felstead, Essex.1   John's father was John Kemp and his mother was Elizabeth Bentall. He had five brothers and two sisters, named William, George, Joseph, Thomas, Edward, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
