Thomas was born in 1783 in South Shields, Durham and his christening took place there in June 1783.1 2   Thomas' father was Thomas Hogg and his mother was Ursula Potts.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Potts and Ursula Hudspeth. He had a brother and six sisters, named John, Ann, Mary, Ursula, Elizabeth, Thomasine and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
