John was born in 1772 in South Shields, Durham and his christening took place there in February 1772.1 2   John's father was Thomas Hogg and his mother was Ursula Potts.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Potts and Ursula Hudspeth. He had a brother and six sisters, named Thomas, Ann, Mary, Ursula, Elizabeth, Thomasine and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
