Margaret was born in 1787 in South Shields, Durham and her christening took place there in June 1787.1 2   Margaret's father was Thomas Hogg and her mother was Ursula Potts.  Her maternal grandparents were Henry Potts and Ursula Hudspeth. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Thomas, Ann, Mary, Ursula, Elizabeth and Thomasine.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
