Jane was born in 1848 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.1   Jane's father was Thomas Fletcher and her mother was Jane Yardley.  Her paternal grandparents were Lot Fletcher and Mary Ann Forbister. She had seven brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Lot, George, James, Henry, Edward, Charles, Agnes, Mary, Matilda, Henrietta and Sophia.  She was the second oldest of the thirteen children.
