Edward was born in 1864 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex.1   Edward's father was Thomas Fletcher and his mother was Jane Yardley.  His paternal grandparents were Lot Fletcher and Mary Ann Forbister. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Lot, George, James, Henry, Charles, Jane, Agnes, Mary, Matilda, Henrietta and Sophia.  He was the third youngest of the thirteen children.
