James was born in 1769 in Kimmeridge, Dorset and his christening took place there on June 6th, 1769.1 2   James' father was Thomas Croombes and his mother was Elizabeth Mathews. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Isaac, Abraham, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 47 on July 5th, 1816 in Kimmeridge, Dorset.3
