Harriet was born in 1765 in Church Knowle, Dorset and her christening took place there on February 24th, 1765.1 2   Harriet's father was Thomas Croombes and her mother was Elizabeth Mathews. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Isaac, James, Abraham, Elizabeth and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the six children.
