Harriett was born in 1798 in Church Knowle, Dorset and her christening took place there on June 3rd, 1798.1 2  Harriett's father was James Croombes and her mother was Jane (Jenny) Hatchard.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Croombes and Elizabeth Mathews; her maternal grandparents were George Seymour Hatchard and Jenny Stickland. She had a brother and three sisters, named Asher, Elizabeth, Hannah and Edith.  She was the oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 50 in June 1848 in Eling, Hampshire.3
