Mary was born in 1836 in Eling, Hampshire and her christening took place there on April 24th, 1836.1 2   Mary's father was George Frederick Broomfield and her mother was Ann Eliza Bromfield.  Her paternal grandparents were John Broomfield and Hester Hopkins; her maternal grandparents were Robert Bromfield and Ann Plomley. She had a brother and four sisters, named Aaron, Ruth, Ann, Alice and Rose.  She was the oldest of the six children. She had three half-brothers named James, Mark and Isaac.
