Ann was born in 1843 in Eling, Hampshire.1   Ann's father was George Frederick Broomfield and her mother was Ann Eliza Bromfield.  Her paternal grandparents were John Broomfield and Hester Hopkins; her maternal grandparents were Robert Bromfield and Ann Plomley. She had a brother and four sisters, named Aaron, Mary, Ruth, Alice and Rose.  She was the third youngest of the six children. She had three half-brothers named James, Mark and Isaac.
