Walter was born on June 4th, 1862 in Southampton, Hampshire and his christening took place on July 26th, 1863 in Saint James, Southampton, Hampshire.1 2   Walter's father was Charles Barnes and his mother was Angelina Mary Ann Philpot.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Barnes and Hannah Over; his maternal grandparents were William Philpot and Margaret Norman. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Charles, George, James, Edward, Henry, Arthur, Hannah, Angelina, Emily and Rita.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 81 in December 1943 in Southampton, Hampshire.3
