George was born on December 6th, 1861 in Edinburgh Mid Lothian Scotland.  George's father was Robert Howie and his mother was Mary Anne Comb.  His paternal grandparents were Oliver Howie and Agnes Clark; his maternal grandparents were Mathew Comb and Mary Crombie. He had two brothers and a sister, named Oliver, John and Agnes.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
