Mary was born in 1868 in Horton Blyth Northumberland England.  Mary's father was William Hume Crombie Comb and her mother was Janet McGregor.  Her paternal grandparents were Mathew Comb and Mary Crombie; her maternal grandparents were Alexander McGregor and Elizabeth Robertson. She had four brothers named Alexander, Mathew, James and William.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
