James was born in 1871 in Blyth Northumberland England.  James' father was William Hume Crombie Comb and his mother was Janet McGregor.  His paternal grandparents were Mathew Comb and Mary Crombie; his maternal grandparents were Alexander McGregor and Elizabeth Robertson. He had three brothers and a sister, named Alexander, Mathew, William and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
