Susannah was born in 1858 in Horsforth Yorkshire.1   Susannah's father was David Jackson and her mother was Mary Ann Rhodes.  Her paternal grandfather was David Jackson and her paternal grandmother is Ann Eastburn; her maternal grandfather is James Rhodes. She had four brothers and five sisters, named James, John, David, Samuel, Mary, Eliza, Elizabeth, Mary A and Sarah A.  She is the eighth oldest of the ten children.
