Robert 's father was William (twine spinner) Spelman and his mother was Charlotte Nichols. His paternal grandparents were Thomas (twine spinner) Gt Yarmouth-Bethnal Gree Spelman and Mary Foster. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Henry, Joseph, Susannah, Emma, Victoria, Charlotte and Rose. He was the third oldest of the nine children.
