Charles was born about 1890 in Grimsby.¹ Charles' father was Thomas Mothersdill ( Fisherman) and his mother was Emma Sophia Blakeney (b Barking dressmaker). His maternal grandparents were Charles Blakeney (Fisherman (b Maidstone)) and Sarah Ann Crawley (b Barking). He had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Albert and Jessie. He was the second youngest of the four children.
