William was born in 1830 in Barking Essex. William's father was John Groves ( Sawyer) and his mother was Amy Simmans. His maternal grandparents were William Simmans (LinenDraper) and Sarah Belchar. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Joseph, Henry, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
