John was born about September 1832 in Barking Essex and his christening took place on October 25th, 1832 at St Margaret's Church Barking.¹ John's father was John Groves ( Sawyer) and his mother was Amy Simmans. His maternal grandparents were William Simmans (LinenDraper) and Sarah Belchar. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Joseph, Henry, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
