Joseph was born in 1838 in Barking Essex. Joseph's father was John Groves ( Sawyer) and his mother was Amy Simmans. His maternal grandparents were William Simmans (LinenDraper) and Sarah Belchar. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Henry, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary. He was the second youngest of the seven children. He died about October 15th, 1857 in Barking Essex. The funeral took place on October 18th, 1857 at St Margaret's Barking and was arranged by Saggers. He was buried on October 18th, 1857 at St Margaret's Barking.¹
