Matilda was born in 1836 in Barking Creek.  Matilda's father was James Croney (Fisherman) and her mother was Matilda Ship.  Her paternal grandparents are James Croney and Lucy; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Ship (Blacksmith) and Mary Elizabeth Duffield. She had a brother and four sisters, named Joseph, Mary, Ellen, Charlotte and Annie.  She was the second oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 35 on November 12th, 1871.
