Mary was born in 1836 in Barking Essex.  Mary's father was James Croney (Fisherman) and her mother was Matilda Ship.  Her paternal grandparents are James Croney and Lucy; her maternal grandparents were Samuel Ship (Blacksmith) and Mary Elizabeth Duffield. She had a brother and four sisters, named Joseph, Matilda, Ellen, Charlotte and Annie.  She was the oldest of the six children.
