His paternal grandfather was Alfred Ambrose and his paternal grandmother is Ann; his maternal grandparents were Esau Brewer (a Groom Glenny Brewery) and Sarah Smith (Salvation Army BUR K 874). He had five brothers and three sisters, named Norman, Ernest, Charles, Arthur, Alfred, Kate, Alice and Ada. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
