Norman was born about 1886 in Barking Essex. Norman's father was William John Ambrose (K 874 Rippleside) and his mother was Jessie Brewer (K 874 Rippleside). His paternal grandfather was Alfred Ambrose and his paternal grandmother is Ann; his maternal grandparents were Esau Brewer (a Groom Glenny Brewery) and Sarah Smith (Salvation Army BUR K 874). He had five brothers and three sisters, named Ernest, William, Charles, Arthur, Alfred, Kate, Alice and Ada. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
