Janet's father was William Willock and her mother was Agnes McLatchie. Her maternal grandparents were William McLatchie and Janet Dalzell. She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, William, George, Hugh, Mary and Agnes. She was the third oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 2 in 1859 in Ayr.
