Walter's father was John Weston and his mother was Susan Paton. His maternal grandparents were James Paton and Henrietta Baxter. He had seven brothers named John, James, Thomas, George, David, William and David. He was the second youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 80 in 1958 in Tradeston.
