John's father was Ronald Webster and his mother was Agnes Rogers. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Webster and Margaret Baxter. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Robert, Ronald, Alexander, James, George, David and Margaret. He was the youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 82 in 1974 in Edinburgh.
