James' father was Thomas Webster and his mother was Elizabeth Livingstone. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Webster and Margaret Baxter. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, David, Hugh, James, George, Margaret, Margaret, Fanny and Agnes. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 6 in 1863 in Currie.
