Hugh's father was Robert Wason and his mother was Mary Helen Tunnycliffe Higgins. His paternal grandparents were William Wason and Susan Flinn. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, Robert, Susan, Selina and Wason. He was the second oldest of the six children.
