Peter's father was Richard Turner and his mother was Isabella Smith.  His paternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Richard, Robert, George, William, Janet and Isabella.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
