John's father was Richard Turner and his mother was Isabella Smith.  His paternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Marshall. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Richard, Robert, Peter, George, William, Janet and Isabella.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 23 on March 20th, 1873 in Kirknewton.  He was buried in East Calder.^3 3
