John's father was James Towers and his mother was Susan Munro. His paternal grandparents were James Towers and Annabella Ferguson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, William, John, Annabella, Mary, Jessie and Susan. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 2 in 1873 in Gorbals.¹
